These are ranks, not actual power levels. They are closer to being positions in a Witch Coven then names for power level. Not every Coven uses these ranks, nor are they absolutely necessary. These are just used to give people an idea of what the ranking would be for powers and knowledge of a witch. These ranks are a throwback to the apprentice master system that has been in existance for several centuries.
Neophyte:
Generally a young witch, this is someone who just shown power and has begun to get training from another witch or a full Coven. Think of them as newly converted to being a witch. A Neophyte is considered the student of the whole coven and will learn from everyone until they reach a point where they reach Apprentice level.
Apprentice:
An Apprentice is someone who has some training in being a witch, it's this point where they know what they're weak or strong in. This is the most common group of Witches as most never progress beyond being an apprentice. Apprentices often answer to one Master, generally someone who specializes in what they are weak so as to gain a better understanding of that trait. An apprentice generally lives with the Master Witch that they answer to. It's not uncommon for an Apprentice to stay with a Master for years.
Journeyman:
The second most common rank. A journeyman witch is someone who has learned enough that they no longer require training in one specific thing. There is still alot for them to learn but they are well rounded for the most part. Journeymen typically leave their Coven to travel the world and learn from other Masters across the world. Even if they have completed their pilgramage and return home, most never move beyond this rank. Generally when a Journeyman is with a Master they are the ones that complete work (spells, runes, potions, etc) but they don't live with a Master the same way an Apprentice does.
Master:
The master witch has gained enough skill and is well rounded. Master witches are also older. There is generally only one master witch in an area as it takes years to reach this level. A Master Witch tends to know alot about every skill and generally has several Journeymen and Apprentices as their students. A Master witch has dedicated her life to becoming the best at what she does. This type of Witch is unsurpassed in her main field and is often the go-to for questions.
Grand Witch:
The Grand Witch is the oldest and most powerful of witches. Believed to be several centuries old, this witch is thought to have learned how to cheat death through her connection to nature. The Grand Witch does not get involved in any conflict that is not considered world altering.
